Free Comic Book Day is an occurrence that happens every year on May 1 to bring new readers into North American comic stores. The event is organized by the industry distributor “Diamond Comic Distributors” to give readers a list of options of beginning stories from various studios to entice consumers to become avid comic fans.

The idea was initially pitched in 2001 to coincide with the release of the first Spider-Man movie and has been a successful event every year. Even with the saddening cancellation due to COVID-19, Marvel has still decided to uphold tradition and release its two issues to the world.
Marvel’s first comic for Free Comic Book Day is X-Men #1, which is a prelude to the future X of Swords crossover event. The issue is set to release on July 15 and is written by authors Jonathan Hickman and Tom Taylor and features artwork done by Pepe Larraz and Iban Coello.
The second issue Marvel planned to release is the Spider-Man/Venom #1, which is meant to piece unanswered questions from the ongoing titles The Amazing Spider-Man, Venom, and Black Cat. This issue will release on July 22 and feature work by Ryan Stegman, Donny Cates, Patrick Gleason, and Jed MacKay.
There is no word if DC plans to release it’s Free Comic Book Day issue Generation Zero which tells the story of Wally West becoming the Flash. However, it is good to see that Marvel is trying its best to maintain normality in these uncertain times.
