Since then, Crystal Dynamics has released a lot of new content for Marvel’s Avengers, including full story DLCs for Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, and an expansion centered around Black Panther. In addition, Spider-Man was announced as an exclusive character for PlayStation platforms in August 2020. It has taken more than a year to materialize, but Spider-Man is now available on the PS4 and PS5 versions of Marvel’s Avengers, and Crystal Dynamics has released a new trailer accompanying its release.

While the Spider-Man DLC does not have any proper story missions, his arrival does kick off a new Hero event. Appropriately titled “With Great Power” players can use Spider-Man without having completed the original story campaign or any post-launch DLC operations. The trailer mentions that the Hero event revolves around Spider-Man stopping AIM from getting access to powerful technology. Peter Parker is in his early 20s, and he is initially recruited by AIM as an intern. He soon realizes that AIM is mistreating Inhumans, and seeks the Avengers’ help in dealing with this threat.
As a part of this DLC, players will also be able to tackle new challenges and HARM training missions in order to earn unique rewards for Spider-Man. Around 40 suits have been confirmed for Spider-Man that can be earned through gameplay or purchased via the in-game store.
Despite a rocky start, the player base for Marvel’s Avengers has seen an increase thanks to its availability on subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now. Crystal Dynamics continues to add content to the game, and the latest update released on November 30 seems to have made a lot of improvements. It also adds The Discordant Sound Raid to Marvel’s Avengers, that sees the Avengers facing off against Klaw.
Last month, Square Enix had commented on the state of Marvel’s Avengers, confirming that it was a disappointment. The publisher claimed that Crystal Dynamics’ talents were not properly utilized, and stated that the developer was not the right fit for a Games as a Service style Avengers title. However, Square Enix believes that the GaaS model will continue to grow in importance in the coming years.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
