However, while it is fun to wear costumes like the Into The Spider-Verse suit from Spider-Man: Miles Morales - especially because of the extra work done to give the suit the same choppy animation from the film - it is hard not to feel out of place when wearing this costume and swinging around. Filters like those seen in games like The Last of Us Part 1 could change that, with Insomniac using the mechanic to make the webslinger’s more unique outfits feel a lot more natural when used in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Suits That Could Benefit From Filters in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

One suit that would be perfect for a matching filter in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the Vintage costume. Designed to look like it was pulled straight out of a comic book, the Vintage suit boasts a unique cel shaded art style that makes it look as if it was hand-drawn. If a Vintage filter was added to the entire game, players could feel as if they were living out an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, with all the NPCs being given cel shaded looks like Peter Parker. Such a filter would likely evoke nostalgia in fans of Ultimate Spider-Man, a classic game that had a similar visual style.

The aforementioned Into The Spider-Verse costume from Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a fan favorite because of how much love Insomniac Games put into its creation. While making the animation intentional messy was likely no easy feat for Insomniac, a filter that applies the choppy movement to the various NPCs living out their lives in New York City could be a great way to increase immersion. Some more vibrant colors for the buildings and other structures could help, too, allowing the game to feel like another story in Sony’s animated Spidey universe.

Two more great examples come in the form of costumes that were not featured in the original Marvel’s Spider-Man or Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Given the series’ love for MCU suits thus far, it would not be shocking to see What If…?’s Zombie Hunter Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Freshman Year’s old school art style represented within the sequel. If these costumes do come, matching filters that make everything and everyone in the city look like they came from these animated series could prove entertaining. A filter and suit based on the beloved animated series Spectacular Spider-Man would be welcome, too, as would a filter that extends the Spider Clan Suit’s style to the boroughs of New York.

Even a negative filter could be fun to play with in-game, and it seems viable considering how it already exists in Marvel’s Spider-Man’s photo mode. This goes for the other filters included in the photo mode, as getting shots that look good with these filters could be significantly easier if they were usable during gameplay. If Insomniac wanted to embrace filters in its next game, it is clear that there are several options available to the developer.

Filters could even be a fun bonus reward for completing side activities in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with players unlocking them after completing a batch of optional content. They could also be awarded for using certain suits for a long period of time, or completing challenges with said costumes. Though gameplay filters would surely not be a game changing addition, those looking to spend a lot of time with the game would undoubtedly appreciate the option during their extra playthroughs or open-world exploration.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to release in 2023 for PS5.
