Props to Electronic Arts and BioWare for making this original property explode. Mass Effect 3 is making headlines for introducing multiplayer to the franchise, and if action figures and an art book that ship with DLC isn’t enough, how about a Mass Effect mobile app?

The four-player cooperative multiplayer mode being introduced in Mass Effect 3 follows the same guidelines BioWare applies to the game’s single-player campaign, in that it must be story and character focused. Mass Effect 3 gave them the perfect opportunity to finally include such a mode since the story involves the entire galaxy at war. How fitting then is the ‘Galaxy at War’ name applied to multiplayer. It is this system that will be the focus of the Mass Effect 3 app. This is what EA said to Kotaku on the matter:

We don’t expect this to be any sort of Vita/3DS game. Perhaps what EA and BioWare are doing is including a Call of Duty Elite sort of app across iOS and Android platforms, something that lets players keep track of of the war and see where they (and their real-life friends) need to go next to fight the Reapers.

This is all speculation but the idea of getting even more involved with Commander Shepard’s war effort on the go, and having that extra interaction is something to get excited about.

Mass Effect 3’s release next month is generating so much buzz that Rockstar Games and Ubisoft held back some of their major releases in Max Payne 3 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, respectively - And I don’t think those games have mobile apps coming. Check out the Mass Effect 3: Special Forces trailer if you’re convinced on coop play.

Mass Effect 3 releases March 6, 2012 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
